Car Wash This project came out of brainstorming for a design for the Agnes Scott College Community Orchestra program and poster for the 2007 Fall Concert. I was looking for abstract imagery in my photography that could illustrate the experience of listening to music. I stumbled upon this short video that I took for fun on my Sony Cyber-shot digital camera in a car wash at a gas station. After watching it again, I decided to use other imagery for the Orchestra design and continue working with the movie on its own. While the motion in the movie already reminded me of the sensation of listening to music, what was missing was the music itself. Pauline Worusski, a junior music student at Agnes Scott, agreed to compose a score for the film. I have her (and her advisor, Dr. Juan Chattah) to wholeheartedly thank for transforming this everyday visual into a meditative experience. After many movie and score versions and long nights in the music lab, this is the result of our collaboration. I wrote the score on the music software Sibelius, then recorded the track with students of the Agnes Scott College Community Orchestra. I went through one faster version of the piece, then one that was a bit slower, and finally found myself with a piece that was rather peaceful and had most instruments rest on long notes. In the end, I merged both recordings into one, which is what you can hear now. I hope that the musical and visual representation of our collaboration brings the viewer and listener as much joy as it brought us.
