Elizabeth Hinkle-Turner Finish Line (2003) Finish Line was requested in memory of my father-in-law, Dr. Tom Turner, by his friend and fellow Allard collector Larry Johansen of the duo Ventus Musicus. The work features some of the items Turner enjoyed and supported the most: cars and more cars, my "quirky" atonal music (which he used to play over the loudspeakers in the operating room at the hospital), and my multimedia work (he gave me my first video camera). Dr. Turner was also known internationally as a vintage race car restorer and driver and helped to raise the profile of the Allard, a noted British racecar of the 1940's and 1950's. The red “8 Ball “ Allard which he usually raced figures prominently in the video. Finish Line takes as its foundation the Requiem Mass and all taped materials are derived from a reading of this service by my mother who is a noted classics scholar. All electroacoustic materials were created and processed using ProTools and CSound while the video materials were developed using Macromedia Director and Adobe Premiere software. It is my hope that Finish Line has managed to combine the personal, the atonal, the humorous, and the weird in the way that Dr. Turner seemed to like my music the most. The original Finish Line was composed for organ, trumpet, tape, and video and was premiered at the 2003 International Trumpet Guild Conference. This is a standalone video work that was inspired by that live performance. Length of work: 9 minutes Elizabeth Hinkle-Turner (b. 1964) received her D.M.A. (1991) in music composition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has served as acting director of the electronic and computer music studios at Florida International University in Miami and the Experimental Music Studios at the University of Iowa and has been a faculty member at the University of Illinois and the Oberlin Conservatory. She is the vice president and webmaster for the International Alliance for Women in Music (IAWM). Currently she serves as Student Computing Services Manager at the University of North Texas. Hinkle-Turner is the author of the book series Crossing the Line: Women Composers and Music Technology (volume one: United States released by Ashgate Publishing in January 2006) and the cd-rom Full Circle. She has won awards from the Institut International de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges, ASCAP, Mu Phi Epsilon, Meet the Composer, and the American Music Center. She is the owner of the WAVE_LIST listserv - a list devoted to the discussion and study of gender issues in music technology.
